Leadership training opportunities through the AMC include Local Outdoor Leadership & Training and Mountain Leadership School.
Local Outdoor Leadership & Training
Interested in leading your own groups outdoors? Volunteers lead a wide variety of trips and activities… paddling, hiking, biking, climbing, conservation, education, young members, major excursions, and many more! Annual training is offered to trip leaders and there is a significant discount to obtain the 16-hour Wilderness First Aid certification.
AMC activity committees qualify leaders based on apprenticeship with an experienced leader, training, and demonstrated skills. The requirements to become a leader vary between activities and chapters. Contact the Activities Executive at firstname.lastname@example.org to learn more about the steps required to become a leader.
Trip Leader Training:
Date: Saturday February 25, 2017 at the AMC Office in New York City
This training is designed to provide the foundation soft-skills and tools required for leading trips for any of the committees of the NY-NoJ chapter. Participation in the training is the first step towards leading trips; after this training you will need to complete the training requirements for your specific activity. Leader status will be determined by the chair of the activity. Training will run from 10 a.m. to approximately 2:00 p.m. with lunch included. This is offered free of charge.

The NY-NoJ Chapter would like to invite you to “Save the Date” for our 2017 Leadership Symposium on the weekend of 6/16-18/2017. During this weekend, we’ll bring together potential new and current leaders to focus on: Developing the skills necessary to lead successful, fun trips, delve into the online tools available to AMC leaders, share best practices, meet new people and have a great time exploring our new facility at Harriman State Park!

Mountain Leadership School
AMC’s Mountain Leadership School (MLS) is a five-day wilderness leadership training program designed to help you lead groups with minimal impact in the backcountry. Now in its 6th decade, this program is staffed by senior AMC volunteers who have a wide variety of backcountry knowledge and experience. MLS is designed for AMC chapter leaders, camp counselors, youth group leaders, and avid hikers who lead groups of friends. For more information, visit the AMC Club website.
