FAQ

What kinds of paddling trips does NY-NoJ AMC offer?

NY-NoJ AMC offers trips covering many disciplines of paddling, including whitewater kayaking, sea kayaking and different kinds of canoeing. Our trips range from gentle rivers in the New Jersey Pine Barrens to challenging whitewater, and from placid lakes to rough ocean surf. Some of our trips are day trips. Others are weekend trips with car camping at a convenient campsite. Many weekend trips feature community cooking while others take advantage of inexpensive restaurants. One or two trips a year are expeditions in which we carry all our gear in the boats and camp overnight on the river bank. Trips are listed in the NY-NoJ triennial activities schedule and on the chapter website. The website is generally more up-to-date, since new trips are added throughout the year due to fortuitous rainfalls.

Does NY-NoJ AMC offer canoe and kayak training?

Yes, our Training Program includes courses from beginner through intermediate skill levels. Details about these courses are in the on-line schedule.  Be aware our instructional programs are very popular and usually fill-up early.  Register today!

Do I need my own boat to paddle with NY-NoJ AMC?

No, you don’t need to own a boat to paddle with the AMC. We own several fleets of boats that are available for rent on scheduled trips and isntructions.  Our rental rates are nomianl.  Boat rentals generally need to be picked up and returned to our Barn in Rockland County, NY.

Who are the trip leaders for NY-NoJ AMC and what do they do?

All CKC canoe and kayak trip leaders are AMC members who volunteer their time and skills to share their love of paddlesports.

AMC paddling trips are not catered affairs: you are expected to share the unloading, loading, camping and cooking chores that make our trips successful and inexpensive. As a rule, we don’t cancel canoe and kayak trips due to bad weather, but trip plans may be altered by changing water levels and the weather.

What if it is raining?  Will the trip be cancelled or a rain date be scheduled?

As a rule, Canoe Kayak trips run rain or shine.  We generally don't cancel paddling trips due to bad weather, but trip plans may be altererd due to changing water levels and the extremely adverse weather that may create paddling hazards.  Also remember that while it may be raining in one location, the sun may be shining at your paddling destination!
