Middle Branch of the Moose River - Singing Waters Campground to McKeever Gauging Station
- Distance ~6 miles, Drop ? ft, Gradient 17 ft/mi, Class III, depends on releases.
- Put-in at Singing Waters Campground on river right off Route 28, halfway between McKeever and Old Forge.
- The Middle Branch Moose is a good trip for intermediate paddlers. The trip begins with easy class II boulder garden rapids. At about 3/4 of a mile the river passes under a railroad bridge. Those not wishing to run class IV Nelson's Falls should take out on the right and carry 1/4 of a mile down the tracks. Below the falls boulder garden rapids are almost continuous to the confluence with main branch except for 1/2 mile of flatwater at Nelson Lake. The rest of the trip is mainly flatwater. Take care to stay clear of the mill ruin just upstream of the route 28 bridge. It is badly undercut.
- Take-out at one-half mile below McKeever Bridge at gauging station on left on Moose River Road.
Alternate:
Middle Branch of the Moose River - Jct North Branch to McKeever Gauging Station
- Distance 11.5 miles, Drop 203 ft, Gradient 17 ft/mi, Class III, depends on releases.
- Put-in one-tenth mile below Rt 28 Bridge in Old Forge.
- Placid for the first few miles after the put-in.
Alternate:
Middle Moose River - McKeever to Rock Island (not to be confused with the Middle Branch of the Moose.)
- Distance 3 miles, Drop ~30 ft, Gradient ~10 ft/mi, Class III, depends on releases .
Salmon River - Route 2A to the Black Hole
- Distance ~3.5 miles, Drop ~80-90 ft, Gradient ~24 ft/mi, Class III, runs all season with releases.
- Put-in on river right on Rt 2A/Peck Rd, off Rt 13 east of town.
- A long fast rapid follows down to I-81. Below are several fast class III rapids. The heaviest whitewater is as you approach the NY 11 bridge. Roller coasters and haystacks! After the bridge ride the left wave train but watch for Titanic, a great, deep surfing hole (you'll see the boaters waiting in line!) After a flat stretch, the water hits a right side cliff wall, with a nice surf wave at the bootom, immediately before the stillwater take-out on right.
- Take-out at the "Black Hole" (sewage treatment) at the west end of pulaski, river right, at the end of Riverview Drive off Lake Street. Or 2-3 more miles to Selkirk Shores NYS Campground on left.
Fish Creek (East Branch) - Point Rock to Taberg
Distance 8-9 miles, Drop 480 ft, Gradient 60 ft/mi, Class II-III-IV?, runs Apr-May.
Put-in at Yorkland Road, the bridge near Point Rock (9 mi), or below the City of Rome dam (4.5 mi).
Levels on gauge on Main Street bridge in Taberg. Painted on downstream river left abutment. Two feet should be considered low, five feet is high. Minimum: 1.5 feet (class 3) ; Medium: 3 feet (class 3+) ; High: 4.5 feet (class 4). This is a natural flow river and is generally runnable in spring and fall after heavy rains. The East Branch of Fish Creek is justifiably a favorite of New York whitewater paddlers. Few streams can match its continuous rapids, numerous play spots, and the scenery of its gorge. Because of the continuous nature of the rapids and the likelihood of strainers, paddlers should have at least intermediate skills and a reliable roll.
Take-out at Taberg Bridge, or Blossvale Road, 3/4 miles south of Taberg.
