Chapter Youth Program Re-Launches
The New York-North Jersey Chapter is gearing up to re-launch its chapter youth program, AMC Outings for Urban Kids (AOK), which will link urban youth groups with AMC leaders interested in sharing the wonder and adventure of the outdoors. The program will be targeted to children and teens who may not have had any previous opportunities to explore the natural environment.
If you are interested in becoming a youth activity leader, please contact Richard Barcia at 212-303-8889 (w), (212) 832-0232 (h) or
for further information. Please note that all leaders must undergo a background check as well as training, which will be provided by the AMC.
We are also presently looking for at least two chapter youth program coordinators to help supervise the program and serve as liaisons to participating agencies.
We hope that you will consider becoming part of this exciting and rewarding endeavor.
Closed Boaters Notice
Closed boaters without a Club rating will be asked to demonstrate a wet exit before the start of a trip, or provide the name (well in advance of the trip) of a Chapter member who has witnessed the demonstration of a wet exit either in the pool, at a course or on a previous trip. All closed boaters
MUST wear helmets.

September Schedule
Mentor Program
Our new mentor program can assist, encourage, and inform you on your paddling way. Have questions on canoeing or kayaking? Ask our friendly group of mentors:
&
- TBA
- Please check the printed schedule until this web page is updated.
REGISTRATION INFORMATION: - These trips are for AMC members and nonmembers; advanced registration is always required. See The Feathers, the AMC, NY-NoJ Chapter paddling members' manual, for further information. The actual costs for camping and food are shared by all participants. Any boat rental cost is additional.
LEADERS: - All AMC NY-NoJ Chapter canoe trip leaders are volunteers - they are not professionals and are not paid or subsidized. However, most of our leaders have completed our leadership training program and many are American Canoe Association (ACA) Certified Instructors.
REMEMBER: Canoeing and kayaking are risk sports. When you participate in a cruise or an instruction trip, you alone assume that risk. Each person is ultimately responsible for their own safety, both on and off the river.
Rating System: Canoe & Kayak Trips
Flatwater Trips
(BW) ~ Easy rivers, streams and/or lakes. Gentle current, and usually easy carries around rapids and obstacles. Beginning paddlers rarely have any difficulty if physically capable. Called "BW" for the Brown Water that is typical of The New Jersey Pinelands streams.
Whitewater Trips
These are edited for brevity, see full descriptions in The Feathers.
(CL 1) ~ Class I Whitewater; Fast moving water with riffles and small waves. Few obstructions. Risk to swimmers is slight, self-rescue is easy. Novice Padders.
(CL 2) ~ Class II Whitewater; Straightforward rapids with wide, clear channels which are evident, maneuvering may be required, but rocks and medium sized waves are easily missed by trained paddlers. Swimmers are seldom injured and group assistance, is seldom needed. Intermediate Paddlers
(CL 3) ~ Class III Whitewater; Rapids with moderate, irregular waves which may be difficult to avoid and which can swamp an open canoe. Complex maneuvers in fast current and good boat control is required. River contains strong eddies and powerful currents. Scouting is advisable for inexperienced parties. Self-rescue is usually easy but group assistance may be required to avoid long swims. Advanced Paddlers.
(CL 4) ~ Class IV Whitewater; Intense, powerful rapids requiring precise boat handling in turbulent water. River may feature large, unavoidable waves and holes or constricted passages demanding fast maneuvers under pressure. A fast, reliable eddy turn may be needed to initiate maneuvers, scout rapids, or rest. Scouting is necessary the first time down. Risk of injury to swimmers is moderate to high, and water conditions may make self-rescue difficult. Group assistance for rescue is often essential but requires practiced skills. A strong eskimo roll is highly recommended. Expert Paddlers Only.
Notes
If rating is shown as (CL 2/3) river contains sections of both Class 2 and 3 water. If rating is (CL 2&3) trip will divide into two groups, a group on the Class 2 section, and another on the Class 3 section. Class 4 trips may include Class V whitewater sections
