Chapter Youth Program Re-Launches

The New York-North Jersey Chapter is gearing up to re-launch its chapter youth program, AMC Outings for Urban Kids (AOK), which will link urban youth groups with AMC leaders interested in sharing the wonder and adventure of the outdoors. The program will be targeted to children and teens who may not have had any previous opportunities to explore the natural environment.

If you are interested in becoming a youth activity leader, please contact Richard Barcia at 212-303-8889 (w), (212) 832-0232 (h) or for further information. Please note that all leaders must undergo a background check as well as training, which will be provided by the AMC.

We are also presently looking for at least two chapter youth program coordinators to help supervise the program and serve as liaisons to participating agencies.

We hope that you will consider becoming part of this exciting and rewarding endeavor.

Hiking Notice

The Hiking Committee does not publish its complete schedule of hikes on the Internet. This is because most of our hikes are what we call "Show-&-Go" and are accessible by public transportation. That means that the full hike description tells you where and when to meet and you just show up and go hiking. Our "Show-&-Go" hikes are too often very large, now, when our schedule is distributed only to members and Guest Card holders. Publication on the Internet would only increase the problem.

A few of our hikes do require advance registration. Some of them are "Starter Hikes" for novices, some have strict participation limits and some are multi-day hiking trips.

If you are an AMC Member, please refer to your NY-NoJ Chapter Schedule booklet or AMC Outdoors magazine for a complete listing of all upcoming hikes. If you are not an AMC Member but are interested in joining us on some of the hundreds of hikes we lead, please see the Join section of the Hiking Page.

Note: You should also review our ratings system and Transportation Codes

This is a list of beginners hikes only. For the complete hike list that include leaders` names and contact information, meeting times and locations, and transportation information, please see the master Schedule of Activities for the Hiking Committee.

Hiking: Other Outings / Co-Sponsored Outings

Rating Systems defined by the responsible activity committees. As an example: If we co-sponsor a Hiking Canoe & Kayak trip, it would be listed as BW (Brown Water), CL 1 (Class 1 whitewater), CL 2 (Class 2 whitewater) or other similar classification. If Hiking Committee co-sponsors the event, the title will contain "Hiking" or (H).

Chapter Activity Disclaimer

The activities and events listed in the New York-North Jersey Chapter Schedule, and other AMC publications, involve varying degrees of danger. When you participate in one of these activities, you should be both physically and mentally prepared and equipped with the appropriate gear. You should always be aware of the risks involved in outdoor activities and conduct yourself accordingly. The trip leader is not responsible for your safety, you are. Prior to registering for any activity, you are encouraged to discuss your capabilities with the trip leader.
To participate in Club and Chapter activities, individuals under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult, or obtain prior consent from the trip leader. Persons accompanying a minor are responsible for the minor's actions.
