The "Singles & Sociables" committee of the New York / North Jersey Chapter provides an opportunity for members and guests to enjoy the exciting outdoors and the great indoors together with the focus on the guests creating a social and fun environment.
Originally formed as a Singles Subcommittee of the Walks & Outings Committee in early 1995, the "Singles & Sociables" Committee ("S&S") became a independent committee in 1996.
The name was selected to be a bit more descriptive than "Singles" alone, because the Committee does not view its guests as unattached people, quite the contrary. There are now (3) three sub committees or categories under S&S. These designations include:
1) "Singles" meaning events attracting mostly those who are solo and want to hook up with others who are just looking to connect as a group and not feel like a third wheel or those seeking to meet up with their future significant other on one of many adventures;
2) "Sociables" meaning events that are typically for both singles and those with partners (even married) who just want to have fun in what they are doing together in the group environment and any activity we are leading; and
3) "50+" meaning a group who enjoy day hikes during the less crowded week. Most of the members who have weekdays (usually Mondays) off to join the 50+ for hikes are, you guessed it, 50+ although there are those who are 30 - 50 yo as well on the hikes.
S&S outings differ from some other Club outings because at S&S events place a greater emphasis on the social aspects of the outing rather than the technical aspects of the activity itself. S&S outings are ideally suited for new members as an introduction to the people and activities of the Chapter and Club.

Requirements vary depending on whether it is an urban social such as a walk in Central Park, dinner in the city, Broadway show, a hike or a multi-day event. The Chair will provide you further details about leadership in AMC and with our committee.
The S&S runs many different kinds of activities. We hike, do trail work, bike, backpack, canoe, etc., and we have dinners, dances and parties.
