Scenic hike beginning on Reeves Brook Trail. From there we will proceed to Raccoon Brook Hill and then Pine Meadow Lake. After PML there is an option for easier out; however, leader will continue on Diamond Mt. Fire Trail and then down to Cascade of Slid and Stony Brook. 1,785 ft.total elevation gain. Moderate pace and stops to admire scenery. If still winter and icy conditions prevail, participants must have traction aids. Please be sure you have at least two liters of water. It stresses safety, preparation, crisis avoidance, and the treatment of problems such as blisters, sprains, hypothermia, heat disorders, protection from the elements and more. This course provides an important level of understanding about recognizing and treating medical emergencies or injuries. And also discusses long-term patient care, a reality of backcountry travel. The WFA is a 16-hour course and can be used to re-certify a WFR level of training. CPR certification can be obtained for $35.00 during the course. The Old Croton Aqueduct (OCA) once carried clean drinking water from the Old Croton Dam and Reservoir in Westchester County to NYC, ending at a reservoir on the site of what is now Bryant Park in Manhattan. We will follow the route of the last section of the aqueduct from Jerome Park Reservoir in the Bronx to Bryant Park, looking for "aqueduct clues" along the way. In selected places we will deviate from the route of the OCA to visit other sites of interest. This is a fast-paced 15-mile walk, with a limited number of stops, so no slowpokes or stragglers! Bring lunch, snacks and water, and wear comfortable shoes. Come prepared for some fun and interesting surprises. For those who would love to try backpacking but are deterred by the thought of having to carry 35-40 lbs. or more. Those who already backpack but want to shed weight are also welcomed. Three-season backpacking (spring, summer, fall) is so much more enjoyable with a lighter load and for many people a lighter load is the difference between backpacking and NOT backpacking. Limited number of participants will day hike in Harriman Park (6-7 miles) and each participant will get the chance to carry leader's fully-packed pack (approx. 25 lbs. inc. food & water) to see how it feels.
