Dolly Sods Blueberry Backpack (WV)

Date : Aug 07 - Aug 08, 2010
Status : Open
Trip Difficulty : Moderate
28136Camping, Backpacking,
Love hiking on open terrain? Love wild blueberries? Love staying at nearly 4000' without the work of hiking up from the base of a mountain? Then this backpacking trip to Dolly Sods is just the ticket for you. It's a high plateau in the heart of the Monongahela National Forest that is renowned for open terrain, radically changing weather and a climate that is more like Canada than Appalachia. Dolly Sods also gets a lot snow in the winter; last year it received 250+ inches. We plan to hike in the area known as Dolly Sods North (North of the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area). This allows for many trail variations (including bushwhacking) to adjust the length to the interest of group. Planned route will start at Bear Rocks Trail (TR522), which begins on Forest Road 75 just south of the Bear Rocks parking lot. We'll hike to the Raven Ridge Trail (TR521) and follow it west until it ends on Cabin Mountain, where we'll pick up the Rocky Ridge Trail (TR524) and follow it south until we get to the Dobbin Grade Trail (TR526) and head back east until we reach the Upper Red Creek Trail (TR509). We'll take that trail south until it joins the Blackbird Knob Trail (TR511), then head east until it ends at Red Creek Campground and Forest Road 75. We'll find a place to camp along the way. The group will hike about 15 miles over generally open terrain with only moderate changes in elevation. Suitable for beginners but be prepared for wet ground and the possibility of fog or cold rain. Trails tend to be rocky. There will likely be a constant wind so wind protection might necessary even in good weather. We'll meet at 8:30am on Saturday morning, at the Red Creek Campground on Forest Road 75. Group size limited to 10. Contact R with any questions. $5 non-refundable registration fee. Register using link below.
