Backpacking Baxter Park With a Winter Sled

Date : Feb 26 - Mar 06, 2011
Status : Open
Trip Difficulty : Strenuous
28033Sledding, Backpacking,
Looking to try something a little different? Want to hone your winter skills to take the next step beyond three-day weekend backpacks? Would you like to camp in one of the most beautiful locations in the Northeast? The objective of this trip is to develop your expeditionary skills. Tent camping at Chimney Pond/Baxter State Park in Maine for six nights in the woods with no place to dry out your gear. Use a mountaineering sled as an approach tool over 15-mile hike (with much elevation gain) to base camp. Four climbing days available; we'll attempt to summit Pamola, Baxter and Hamlin, and possibly Knife Edge Trail if conditions permit. Extended time above treeline with lots of steep terrain to practice on. Above all it is a test of your ability to manage your equipment and keep your clothing and sleep systems dry enough to stay warm and have an enjoyable experience. Must attend a mandatory shakedown sled backpack on 1/8-10, 2011 to Mount Mansfield, Vermont, to confirm our sleds and gear are functioning properly. In order to make an informed decision about whether to apply or not, contact L/R, who will send you detailed info including an itinerary, the cost, learning objectives, gear and previous experience requirements.
