Chapter Youth Program Re-Launches

The New York-North Jersey Chapter is gearing up to re-launch its chapter youth program, AMC Outings for Urban Kids (AOK), which will link urban youth groups with AMC leaders interested in sharing the wonder and adventure of the outdoors. The program will be targeted to children and teens who may not have had any previous opportunities to explore the natural environment.

If you are interested in becoming a youth activity leader, please contact Richard Barcia at 212-303-8889 (w), (212) 832-0232 (h) or for further information. Please note that all leaders must undergo a background check as well as training, which will be provided by the AMC.

We are also presently looking for at least two chapter youth program coordinators to help supervise the program and serve as liaisons to participating agencies.

We hope that you will consider becoming part of this exciting and rewarding endeavor.
    Basic Stuff. . .
  • All you normally need to do is to type in your report as you want it to appear. The form will automatically word wrap when you get to the margins of the box -- but your text will NOT be wrapped at that point in the displayed version. Until you insert a carriage return, [Enter] key, your text will run continuously -- to start a new line insert a carriage return, [Enter]. If you want to start a new paragraph, skip a line, or double-space, insert two carriage returns, [Enter][Enter]. You can also insert HTML tags if you know what that's about, but please see below.
  • If you fill in the information that the form requests, and press [SUBMIT], the cgi program validates the information and asks for corrections or sends us an E-mail Message that contains an HTML page, which we review and upload to the right place.
  • If you fill in the information that the form requests, and press [PREVIEW], the cgi program validates the information and asks for corrections or displays a Preview of your Trip Report as it would look, if you had submitted it. If it looks correct, you can press [SUBMIT] and send it in from the Preview Page or press the [Back] button to return to the form and correct it. You can [PREVIEW] and go back repeatedly until you get it right. Please see Caution below.
  • Photos:
    • If you have photos, and don't know how to insert them yourself, you must tell me where you want which photo. When you want a photo inserted, put a note in your report, and inclose it in "< >'s" like this: "<Put photo 1 here, centered/left side/right side. Caption: Opps! Millie Smith slipped off the rock as she was attempting to rock hop across Silver Creek.>". I'll try to follow your directions.
    • If you can't get your photos on the Internet, or don't know how to tell me where they are, please either send them to me as attachments to an e-mail, or send me prints to scan and upload. If you don't like what I do with your pics, e-mail me your problems. I'll try to fix.
  • You do not have to be online to fill out this form.
    • If you are online, your ISP may disconnect you while you are filling out the form. Filling in forms like this is done within the browser (Netscape or MSIE) and you are not sending characters through your ISP while you're working on it. If you exceed their time limit for idle connections, they will disconnect you.
    • If you get disconnected while working, just continue to fill out the form off-line and press [SUBMIT] or [PREVIEW]. If you have automatic connection to the Internet, your dialer will reconnect you and send the data to the program. If you do not have automatic connection set up, you must reconnect to the Internet, and then press [SUBMIT] or [PREVIEW].
    • You can load the page, then intentionally go off-line, disconnect from your ISP, finish the form, then reconnect and press [SUBMIT] or [PREVIEW].
    Technical Stuff. . .
  • This process uses a programming system called Common Gateway Interface (CGI). You fill out the form, then press [PREVIEW] or [SUBMIT] and it executes a CGI program to do what I want it to do. If you press [SUBMIT] from the Preview page, it also executes the same cgi script.
  • [PREVIEW] Caution: You can include HTML tags in the body of your report if you wish, and you get to test it with [PREVIEW]. However: if you use the tags "&nbsp;" and/or "&quot;", and a few other tags that replace ordinary characters, they will not be correctly entered in the e-mail. IF you have used these tags, or are in doubt, press the [Back] button and [SUBMIT] your report from the form that does it correctly for most tags.
  • Since most people do not know HTML, I have tried to set this up so that it should not be necessary to use any HTML tags. The script will place a <p> tag at the beginning of the report and insert a <br> at every carriage return. Do not use those tags at all or they will be doubled. Using tags like <hr>, <ol>, <ul>, <li>, <dl>, <dd>, <b>, <i>, <u>, etc. does not appear to cause any trouble.
  • Many people would love to see your report. If you have any problems, please e-mail me and I'll try to help.
