Please welcome the NY-NoJ Chapter’s new Trails Committee Chair! Ed Spirko is a New Jersey native who lives with his wife, Pat, in Passaic County. He developed an enthusiasm for outdoor activities early in life, while spending summers at a rural New Jersey lake community. His love of outdoor winter activities stems from time as a young adult living in southern New Hampshire.
An avid hiker, Ed has section-hiked 430 miles of the Appalachian Trail, has been an active trail maintainer, and worked on building stone stairs for the reroute of the AT over Bear Mountain. Additional volunteer work includes a board member of a lake community and previously serving on various township commissions and committees.
Since becoming an AMC member in 2005, fall Adirondack canoe trips and some quiet weekends at the Harriman Outdoor Center have been his favorite activities. He completed the “leading a hike” training in Central Park in February, pre-COVID. Ed is looking forward to putting skills learned to work in the near future.
Having recently retired as training manager of a European automobile company, Ed has been spending more time volunteering and works as a trail steward for NJ Division of Parks and Forestry.
As the Trails Committee Chair, Ed looks forward to coordinating reporting and activities while providing support for the hard-working volunteers, as well as encouraging new volunteers to join in improving trails.
